Despite seeing their 5-run lead whittled down by the end, The West Haven Sailors still held off for an 8-6 victory on Thursday. The CT Barons North closed the gap by scoring on an error and a double in the final frame.
The Sailors were the first to get on the board in the first when Andrew Keeler was struck by a pitch, driving in a run. Jake Safir hit a sacrifice fly, which helped the Barons tie the game at one in the bottom of the first. A walk by Kyle Justo gave West Haven the lead back, 2-1, in the top of the third. Nick D'orso then singled down the right field line, bringing the game to a tie again.
The back and forth game continued, as West Haven retook the lead in the top of the fourth. Sam Ametrano singled, scoring one run, giving the Sailors the 3-2 lead. West Haven plated two more in the top of the fifth on a double by Derek Porto. The Sailors again added two more insurance runs in the sixth, boosting their lead to 7-2.
A double in the ninth would put the Barons within two but that would be all she wrote for the Barons as they came up short in their comeback effort.
Logan Huzi started the game for West Haven and surrendered two hits and two runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking two. Ametrano, John DeBarber, and Jesse Buonocore each appeared in relief for West Haven.
The Sailors amassed 11 hits in the game. Justo drove the middle of the lineup, leading West Haven with three runs batted in. The cleanup hitter had a very productive day going 2-for-3 with those three runs batted in. Ametrano, Connor Crowley, Brandon Chung, and Justo all individually collected two hits for the Sailors. The team overall had patience at the plate, tallying 11 walks for the game. West Haven also had four stolen bases as a team.
West Haven will play the Waterbury Silverbacks next.
