It may have taken seven plus innings for a winner to be decided, but the Sailors were on the fortunate end of their matchup against the Silverbacks, grabbing a 4-2 victory in eight innings.
To put it simply, the pitching came to play in this contest. Junior Brian Goglia and freshman Branden Macdougall squared off while showing off their best stuff. Goglia went 6 ⅔ scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, two walks and punching out seven. Macdougall kept Waterbury in the game, throwing five shutout innings and striking out seven in the loss.
Following a leadoff walk and single, sophomore Derek Porto doubled to take the lead in the eighth inning as Brock Goodwin and Dylan Avgent came around to score. With two outs, Nicolas Piscioniere drove in Porto with an RBI single. Piscioniere scored on the next play as Bobby Black recorded an RBI single of his own.
Waterbury plated two in their last opportunity of offense. West Haven will look to carry the win’s momentum as they continue their road trip with a matchup in Hamden Tuesday evening.
