Sailors Lose Nail Biter in Extras to Miners, Late Game Rally Falls Short

West Haven didn’t lay down after trailing most of Sunday’s matchup vs. Hamden as they eventually fought back to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Their comeback effort would ultimately come up short in the 6-5 loss.
Brian Goglia let up four runs in the first inning, but quickly settled down as he threw five innings while striking out six. The Sailors pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts of Hamden hitters despite the loss.
A Ryan Slack RBI fielder’s choice in the first and a Sean Cleary solo home run in the fourth accounted for West Haven’s only two runs through five innings. The bottom of the sixth inning saw Steve Cifarelli tie the game with a clutch three-run shot to knot the game at five apiece.
Hamden eventually took control in the latter innings as they held on for a victory. The loss wraps up the regular season for West Haven as they shift their focus to the playoffs. Their first test comes on Thursday as they head to Danbury with a showdown with the Lakehounds.
