Sailors Grab Quick Lead Over Riptide in Victory

West Haven wasted no time in their win over Meriden Thursday evening. A quick four spot in the top of the first was all the Sailors needed as they cruised to a 5-1 win.
Starter Brian Goglia was marvelous in his four innings of work, allowing just one hit and one earned run while punching out five. Brock Goodwin and Mason Merchant followed up Goglia’s performance with a combined three shutout innings while giving up just one hit.
Three runs came on the swing of shortstop Derek Porto, who tripled to open up the scoring in the first inning. Ryan Miressi, Nicolas Piscioniere and Brady O’Neil all scored on the extra base hit. Porto led the team with two hits and three RBIs on the day. He also scored a run following Kyle Justo’s fielder's choice.
Sophomore Evan Jones provided insurance in the seventh with his RBI double which brought CJ Berlingo across home. With the offense doing most of the heavy lifting in the first inning and the pitching staff cruising throughout the game, West Haven was put in line for a surefire win.
The Sailors look to make it three wins in a row as they gear up to host Bridgeport in a Friday evening matchup.
